Curiosity’s first victim!

The composite of images shows the first test of the ChemCam laser aboard Curiosity. The rock, named Coronation, was hit by 30 laser pulses over a period of 10 seconds. The energy from the laser on ChemCam turns the atoms at the spot the laser strikes into an ionized plasma. The plasma can then be analyzed by spectrometers on ChemCam to give the chemical composition.
